In 2011, Antoine has a girlfriend, Rose, and is raising two daughters. However, Rose is not Antoine's first love, and he's still infatuated with his ex-wife Carole, the mother of his children. Carole hopes he'll someday return to her, though despite his feelings there's little evidence to suggest he will. In 1969, Jacqueline is a single mother raising a seven-year-old son with Down Syndrome who is not expected to live past 25. We learn that Jacqueline and Carole share a special connection.

A wonderful film about two women who both have an intense love, one for her son and the other for her childhood sweetheart, and how they cope with losing these loves of their lives.

This was a movie about love and not so perfect individuals. Very good indie movie from Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallee, who gave us wonderful movies like C.R.A.Z.Y, Wild, Demolition, The Younge Victoria, Dallas Buyers Club and etc. Check them all, great talent!

I wish I had read the reviews on this one first. It was very different and left us in shock. While I understand not all movies have "fairy tale endings", I was not prepared for this one. High stars for portrayals and was shocking. And yes, did not expect the full nudity in the scenes or deep emotions it evoked.

Still reeling from the film.
Plot well developed, strong characters. Wonderful actors and superb music.
As a viewer had to get to the end to connect the dots.
After that, the only thought is to watch again the film.
Thumbs up!

Brilliant, very unusual , music and acting are extraordinary, especially Vanessa Paradis.
The ending is very strong , you have to let go your thoughts about reincarnation and you wil love it !

Two stories happening in parallel, one in Paris and one in Montreal. Plenty of jumping-back-and-forth in time totally confuses the audience, making the plot hard to follow at places. It is a classical case of style over substance. Definitely a lesser film from Jean-Marc Vallée, a capable director from Quebec. Subtitles.

Interesting parallels are drawn between love triangles in two different times. In one, a mother is devoted to and fiercely protective of her son who has Down syndrome. Their interactions are lovely to see. In the more recent time period, a man with a new girlfriend still has a deeply-felt connection to his ex-wife who was his childhood sweetheart. The tune, Cafe de Flore, is an anthem in both time periods. The reveal at the end is haunting and tragic.

In Quebec, our male protagonist passes about 20 to 30 kids with Downs Syndrome at the airport as he gets ready to board a plane to Paris. Then in a flashback of 40 years earlier, an "unrelated" woman in Paris gives birth to a Downs Syndrome baby. As the 2 scenes are 40 years and a continent apart, those Downs persons cannot be the same or even likely related in the normal sense, but the airport sighting must be a clue to something. The film consists of two different sets of menage a trois. The Canadian one consists of three adults. The Parisian one consists of two kids and an adult, but the love relationships of this second trio are platonic. Each set reveals highly emotional loving relationships. I do not need the hokey reincarnation theory to appreciate the various love relationships.

A love story between a man and woman. And between a mother and her son. A mystical and fantastical odyssey on love.
