This show is one of the few cases I have ever seen where the visual medium is better than the books. The show streamlines the rather meandering plots from the books, for the most in successful ways. The acting is superb in this show. They got fantastic actors like Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, and Sean Bean for the roles. The sets are amazing. The costuming is sublime. In his books, George R.R. Martin set out to bring the grittiness, bloody darkness from medieval Europe that the rest of epic fantasy tends to gloss over. The show brings it to life in gory technicolor, telling the story of political machinations amongst four houses: the Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Targaryens, plus all their hangers-on. At the start of the series, the Targaryens, who were the previous ruling house, are, as far as anyone knows, down to two: Viserys and Daenerys and living in exile. The Baratheons, led by King Robert, had won the throne through a rebellion about sixteen years prior. Ned Stark is one of King Robert's closest friends, who has to make some tough decisions. The Lannisters are one of the most powerful and wealthiest families in the seven kingdoms, and one of their members, Cersei, is Robert's wife, and the queen. The show is utterly fascinating, though not for everyone, as there as scenes of graphic violence, sex, nudity, and language.

The fantasy world of George R.R. Martin is brought to the small screen in a dazzling way. The characters are well developed and the actors who play them provide stunning performances. The story will keep you guessing and gives some surprising twists. This is produced by HBO so expect some language and nudity.

Great series.

Well worth the long wait aat the NYPL.
I agree that its best to watch it on DVD.
...and, if possible, see several episodes in a row at one time,
Its like living in another world !!

Season 1 of just another deeply racist Television series is the extremely sleep inducing bore i really knew it was period.Season 2 is most definitely not changing my mind about this extremely over hyped and overrated series so far period.

If you enjoyed Lord of the Rings, or fantasy novels that deal with a medieval-ish setting, than start watching this series!

READ the Books! So much better, and without the nudity and coarse language that concerns so many.

I'd heard so much about this, I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I wasn't disappointed. Once you get into it, and think you know which direction things are going, the plot takes a different twist than expected. Very clever writing. I'm hooked. The cast is terrific; the settings; the music; even the introductory sequence is mesmerizing. Epic series. FIVE STARS.

I wouldn't say the first season is great, but it is good. It mostly sets up for what is to come. I thought it started off strong, slowed down to almost a boring pace, then picked back up again. Overall though, it is worth checking out if you like that LOTR type genre/atmosphere. The second season is better in my opinion and I'm waiting on the third now.

I watched this series on the recommendation of friends who know how much I enjoy epics and sagas. I was a little afraid, thinking I would be totally lost because I have not read the books. It's actually pretty easy to follow. The music, the sets, the costumes, the actors (esp Sean Bean), the sheer detail and scale are all incredibly magnificent; but for me, the storytelling is plodding and oppressive punctuated by acts of sex or violence. I was prepared for brutality, but I was not prepared for the graphic sexual content. It is definitely not Tolkein! I do intend to read the book(s), but I do not know if I will continue with series.
