By chapter 3 I thought I had figured out how the murder was done. It turned out I was sort of correct, but the plot twists about the marriage of the victim, subsequent murders and the wonderful background characters kept me fascinated. You cannot beat having the coroner lambast an "ancient" couple he left to guard a body for eating while they waited, only to have them remark that, with the time it took the coroner to return, he would have had another couple of bodies dead from starvation. Sacred space indeed!

Good "Who Done It?" story. Interesting from a historical standpoint in regards to forensics (or lack there of).

A good murder mystery with interesting characters. First of a series. If you like this type of story, read Peter Tremayne's books.

I really liked this one! A historical mystery from 1740's England. Impeccable research chops -- and likeable, well-rounded, nicely realized characters, a good villian (not involved in this murder, so he'll be around for the next one!)
