I Loved this book, I actually borrowed it from a friend and couldn't believe how well it was written. Suspenseful, spooky haunted house story. One of the best I have ever read. Fully enjoyed it!
I think this is the best haunted house story I ever read. It's spooky without being gruesome. I enjoyed it also as a slice of life of the 1970s suburbia. Reading it in 2016, it was interesting for me to see how important fancy parties and neighborhood gossip and the country club were to these people. That's a world gone with the wind at this point. I don't know anyone who lives like that, so those people are ghosts to us now as well. I also liked the idea of a haunted house being brand new, not some falling-down old thing. The horrors that happen in the house are all the worst possible things that could happen to the people they happen to, which is interesting. It's not a story about some ghost or goblin appearing and doing malicious things; it's about some horrible entity feeding off pain and suffering and taking from people the things they love the most. It was really diabolical. Anne Rivers Siddons did a great job of creating characters I cared about. She fleshed out a whole neighborhood of people that we then saw deal with the house in question in one way or another. If ghosts really did exist in our world, I think they would menace us like they did in this book. In unseen ways, with just this evil presence meddling in people's lives and taking joy from them.
Uberhappy, attractive and successful Colquitt Kennedy is dismayed when she learns a house is to be built on the wooded lot next door. After the house is built however, it's beautiful and she and her husband have befriended the architect. All seems well until people move in. Three families live in the house in the course of the novel and all come to bad ends. From loss of career, to mental breakdown and escalating to murder, it seems the house it out to get people. Eventually Col and husband Walter sacrifice their comfortable lives to come out and let the public know that they believe the house is evil. All in all an ok book, the first I've read by this author. I was hoping for a bit more of a sense of horror but it was pretty tame. Made into a mediocre movie in 2006.
