How do you do right by EVERYBODY? This story explores that. I feel ... this should be a must view by everyone. Regardless of which religion or lack there of you are, this script is a reflection of the relation between all humankind. The script asks questions I've asked about life/reality. I'm not sure why any religious group would warn people not to watch it - it's not judgemental and it does not present any one religion as wrong. It's purely thought provoking. Many ethnicity & gender are reflected in the cast as a cohesive team.
It's a world of laughter.
A world of tears.
It's a world of hopes.
And a world of fears.
There's so much that we share.
That it's time we're aware.
It's a small world after all.

Wasteland of false metaphores. Horrible....and definitely NOT Christian. Many churches came out with warnings against the heresy of this cult story.
I cannot even appreciate the acting. A few good comments on dealing with forgiveness are preached but not worth doing the time of sitting through it.
Holiness of God, and our humility,sin, forgiveness, redemption are not dealt with. Actually hardly worth writing about except as a warning. Stay away!

From reading the case cover and the death of a little girl, I thought this was going to be a very dramatic movie. A movie showing a family's, mainly the father's, angst of dealing with the death and moving forward with the help of God. It turned out to be a soft, almost light heartened story of a man's struggle with his belief and perspective of God.

The three spiritual characters - Papa, Jesus and Sarayu was odd and then throw Graham Green as a second Papa and a woman as another spirit, it got pretty odd and boring. Could barely finish it.

This is just a phenomenal movie. Words cannot describe how great the story is, the richness of the characters, and the depth of each actor's performances.

I believe that this story is a perfect allegory for all that God is, and how He loves us, each and every one of us, Always. It is, in essence, all that I wish I had known of Him from my childhood and teenage years, through my youth and young adulthood. It has provided a level of clarity for me in my relationship with "Papa" that I had previously not known, or known was available to me.

Consequently, I have experienced a greater level of peace in my mind and spirit than ever before, and I also feel closer to Him than ever before.

I would recommend this movie to any non-believer, current believers, as well as to anyone who has ever suffered; Truly suffered loss, torment, spiritual anguish and pain. This is the type of story that can open doors, knock down walls, and open hearts, to the Greatness of Our God.

This movie is weird - as many people have mentioned in other reviews - but the flow of the film helps transform that weird into an understandable plot if your willing to sit through to the end. And that's the key - are you willing to sit through to the end? This movie is preachy, it just so happens that when I watched it - I needed a little preaching, I needed a reminder of how to forgive and let go. If you don't want to be taken down a self-exploring journey - this movie does not have much to keep you entertained for the hour and change it goes on for.

I found this movie very touching, inspiring and mystical. The acting is excellent, especially by Octavia Spencer, and the script very true to the book. I read the novel several years ago, when it was first published, and was also very moved by it.

I appreciated how the writer made having a "friendship" with God seem so possible and real.

It is also worth watching the special features for additional insights.

This movie is super weird and super boring at the same time. I was pretty disappointed in this movie.

Mostly good acting. Liked the message of course. Our only issue was with all the mumbling. We are rewatching the last hour or so with the subtitles on to see if we missed anything. Speak up people!!

This is the sort of movie that is usually labeled as "inspirational"; it is much more than that, however.

It is a very thoughtful meditation on the nature of God. Don't let that put you off from seeing this film. Even people who are not too keen on religion, will be moved by it.

"The Shack" is based on the novel by the same name, written by William Paul Young, whose idea of God is quite different from that of Evangelical Christianity. He is also the author of a very revolutionary little book titled "Lies we believe about God", in which he talks about his thoughts on God. It's amazing that he hasn't been defrocked (he's a minister, too).

I can't recommend this movie enough (check out "Lies", too!).

I think this was a sweet yet odd story. Advanced science could explain some of it just as much as something supernatural. Things like wormholes or reality gates through advanced physics(magic tricks of a sort). People such as David Copperfield and Chris Angel have performed tricks that match some of what you see. Sending people to Hawaii from a different continent into sunny beach weather, walking on water, floating through the air, appearing and disappearing, etc.

No matter the true means by which the others operated. They were there as support for the man through a difficult time. It is about his journey through his troubles to finding peace.

Only 5 quotes in IMDb ... here are more:

I don't need to punish people. Sin is its own punishment. As difficult as it is for you to accept, I'm in the middle of everything you perceive to be a mess, workin' for your good. That's what I do.
===
Love is meant to exist within a relationship, Mack. That's all we wanna have with you. Even if you can't see it. You are in the center of our love and purpose.
===
I'm the best way any human can relate to Papa and Sarayu. To see me is to see them.
===
But if you're real... then you already know everything I'm gonna say before I even say it, right?
-Yes, but we choose to listen to everything you have to say as if it was for the first time.
===
He said it Himself. "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?"
-No, Mack. You misunderstand the mystery. Don't ever think that what my son chose to do didn't cost us both dearly. Love always leaves a mark. We were there together.

You ever been wrong? Or changed your opinion over time?
-I mean, sure.
And there are billions like you... each determining what you think is good and evil. And when your good clashes with your neighbor's evil, arguments ensue. Wars break out. Because all insist on playing God. You weren't meant to do any of that. All on your own.
===
Mackenzie, you're trying to make sense of your world based on a very incomplete picture. It's like looking through the knothole of your pain. The real underlying flaw in your life is that you don't think that I'm good. I am!
And if you knew me and how much I love you, then even when you don't understand, you could know that I am at work in your life for good. And then you would trust me.

You spent your whole life judging nearly everyone and everything, their actions and motivations. As if you could even know them. You make snap judgments just by the color of someone's skin. Their clothes. Their body language. By all accounts, you're a well-practiced expert, Mackenzie.
===
Is that man guilty?
-I would damn him to hell.
And what of his father, the man who twisted him into this deviant monster?
-I would damn him, too.
How can you stop there? Doesn't the legacy of brokenness go all the way back to Adam? And what about God? Isn't He at fault? He set all this in motion. Especially, if He knew the outcome.
===
What about this boy?
-What about him?
Would you judge him?
-He's a kid.
But you already have.

This was not God's doing.
-He didn't stop it.
He doesn't stop a lot of things that cause him pain. What happened to Missy was the work of evil. And no one in your world is immune from it. You want the promise of a pain-free life.
-Yeah.
Yeah. There isn't one. As long as there is another will in this universe, free not to follow God, evil can find a way in.
-There's gotta be a better way.
And there is. But the better way involves trust.
===
Well, if it's so easy for you to judge God... you must choose one of your children to spend eternity in heaven. The other will go to hell.
-I can't do...
Can't do what? I'm only asking you to do something you believe God does.
So, who will go to hell?

Mack, you are important. And so is everything you do. Every time you love, Mack, or forgive, with every act of kindness, the universe changes. For the better. Mmm. If anything matters, then everything matters.
===
She'd love to see you today. But she lives in a place where there's no impatience, so she doesn't mind waiting.
===
I'm not asking you to excuse what he did. I'm asking you to trust me to do
what's right and to know what's best. And then what? Forgiveness doesn't establish a relationship. It's just about letting go of his throat.
===
I can work incredible good out of unspeakable tragedies. But that doesn't mean I orchestrate the tragedies.
-After everything I've felt in my heart towards you... Why would you keep working on me?
Because that's what love does.
