On a rainy November day police detectives Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein are summoned to a mysterious traffic accident: A woman has fallen from a pedestrian bridge onto a car driving underneath. According to a witness, the woman may have been pushed. The investigation leads Pia and Oliver to a small village, and the home of the victim, Rita Cramer. On a September evening eleven years earlier, two seventeen-year-old girls vanished from the village without a trace. In a trial based only on circumstantial evidence, twenty-year-old Tobias Sartorius, Rita Cramer's son, was sentenced to ten years in prison. Bodenstein and Kirchhoff discover that Tobias, after serving his sentence, has now returned to his home town. Did the attack on his mother have something to do with his return? In the village, Pia and Oliver encounter a wall of silence. When another young girl disappears, the events of the past seem to be repeating themselves in a disastrous manner. The investigation turns into a race against time, because for the villagers it is soon clear who the perpetrator is -- and this time they are determined to take matters into their own hands. An atmospheric, character-driven and suspenseful mystery set in a small town that could be anywhere, dealing with issues of gossip, power, and keeping up appearances.

Good but not great.

I enjoyed reading this book but if I had to put it down to do something else, I didn't feel compelled to pick it back up again as soon as possible.

The plot is good. The story is interesting and layered. The author managed to avoid a cliche that I was dreading and handled the autistic character very nicely.

There are a *lot* of characters. I think that may be what made it hard to get into the story. You are hit with a very large number of characters and spend a very short amount of time with each - at least initially. By the time you're halfway through the book, it's a little clearer who you need to pay attention to - but I don't know that the book really needed to have five or six named/relevant police characters on top of all the townspeople. Pacing is good, and the flashbacks are incorporated well enough that the timeline is easy to follow. The resolution is plausible and works with the rest of the book without being insanely obvious.

Worth reading.

Great plot, complex and devious. But the characters are somewhat shallow and I found it difficult to engage with Tobias.

While searching for a new crime thriller written by a Scandinavian I came across this title. In my view, Germans are not that great with this genre, but I decided to give it a try because the title piqued my interest. Well it turns out that this is an excellent book. The characters intrigue and one dark and surprising crime after another unravels.

Thos book kept me up till 3:00 a.m. I rushed to make sure I had a library hold on her other books, as well.

Main characters are believable - even the villain was believable in the context.

I enjoyed this book. It was intriguing and kept me interested the entire time. I liked the main characters and thought they were realistic and sympathetic.

I thought the depiction of life and mentality of a small town was spot on. It is easy to see a smaller town, dependent on the good will of a single family, fall under the control of the patriarch. I liked the detectives and enjoyed the little bits of their lives being thrown into the book to add a bit of a break from the main plot line. It made them more likeable and well rounded rather than the stuffy, one dimensional cops you see as a side note to main characters so often.

I think Nele Neuhaus created a fun, interesting read and am looking forward to her other works.

This is a great new German writer. Great detail, suspense. Characters are well developed. Can hardly wait for her next book. i hope it continues with the same characters.

Good summer read. Reminded me of, "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," but not as good. I like that it is by a German author and set in Germany. I found the plot unpredictable, for the most part and I liked that.

A German version of a Swedish/Norwegian detective murder mystery. Well done, interesting characters, usual twisted plot.

Good but complicated plot with many plot lines going. Still an enjoyable read.
