A call to action from three of Washington's premier political scholar-journalists, One Nation After Trump offers the definitive work on the threat posed by the Trump presidency and how to counter it.

American democracy was never supposed to give the nation a president like Donald Trump. We have never had a president who gave rise to such widespread alarm about his lack of commitment to the institutions of self-government, to the norms democracy requires, and to the need for basic knowledge about how government works. We have never had a president who raises profound questions about his basic competence and his psychological capacity to take on the most challenging political office in theworld.

Yet if Trump is both a threat to our democracy and a product of its weaknesses, the citizen activism he has inspired is the antidote. The reaction to the crisis created by Trump's presidency can provide the foundation for an era of democratic renewal and vindicate our long experiment in self-rule.

The award-winning authors of One Nation After Trump explain Trump's rise and the danger his administration poses to our free institutions. They also offer encouragement to the millions of Americans now experiencing a new sense of citizenship and engagement and argue that our nation needs a unifying alternative to Trump's dark and divisive brand of politics--an alternative rooted in a New Economy, a New Patriotism, a New Civil Society, and a New Democracy. One Nation After Trump is the essential book for our era, an unsparing assessment of the perils facing the United States and an inspiring roadmap for how we can reclaim the future.

A book to remind yourself how heinous the Republican Party has been in recent years and some proposals, mainly for legislation, for how to bring government back to sanity and to improve some of the pressing issues of the country that Congress doesn't seem to be getting to.

The first half of the book describes the factors of the last fifty years that led to an authoritarian government tossing out one democratic ideal after another including degradation of minorities, the LGBTQ community and women, foreign democracies, etc. The last half of the book gives some ideas of how to repair the wreckage once Trump is no longer in the government. One interesting analysis points out that the smaller states, mostly Republican, get an advantage in that even if they have a miniscule population they still get three representatives in congress and three electoral votes. And then by winning the state legislatures in 2010, Republicans gerrymandered many states to gain 65% of the seats with 49% of the votes. And then the Republican majority Supreme Court enabled billionaires to buy elections and Republican states to suppress the votes of minorities and college students. The damage of the last ten years is massive and much will be long lasting.

In this well-written book, three seasoned journalists from across the political spectrum encourage Americans to really take a look at what Trump’s (temporary) victory means and how to ensure it never happens again: “Trumpism represents something far more important than the scheming of one man. To see clearly where Trumpism come from is to understand that this worldview did not just suddenly sweep the country, does not command vast support among the American people, and does not represent an irresistible wave of the future. But for Trump and Trumpism to be defeated, Americans must understand the nature of the threat that he poses, the shortcomings in our society that he exploited, and the dangers of his overt and covert appeals to racism [misogyny] and xenophobia. They must also embrace public engagement—from demonstrating and attending town meetings to organizing a precinct, registering voters, working on campaigns, running for office, and, of course, voting itself. Saving our democracy requires citizens to devote themselves to the messy, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately gratifying work of self-government. NOTE: this book was written before Mueller began his steadfast investigations into the administration’s Russian ties.

The authors are more optimistic than I am. But overall, a well reasoned and presented progressive view of our current, if dismal, situation with this so-called president... and what he represents.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the courageous German churchman who was killed by the Nazis shortly before the end of World War II for his participation in the plot against Hitler, taught us that "nothing that we despise in the other man is entirely absent from ourselves ..... We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do and omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer."
