World War II comes to Farleigh Place, the ancestral home of Lord Westerham and his five daughters, when a soldier with a failed parachute falls to his death on the estate. After his uniform and possessions raise suspicions, MI5 operative and family friend Ben Cresswell is covertly tasked with determining if the man is a German spy. The assignment also offers Ben the chance to be near Lord Westerham's middle daughter, Pamela, whom he furtively loves. But Pamela has her own secret: she has taken a job at Bletchley Park, the British code-breaking facility. As Ben follows a trail of spies and traitors, which may include another member of Pamela's family, he discovers that some within the realm have an appalling, history-altering agenda. Can he, with Pamela's help, stop them before England falls? Inspired by the events and people of World War II, writer Rhys Bowen crafts a sweeping and riveting saga of class, family, love, and betrayal.

Currently, Farleigh Place is used by the British armed forces for its headquarters during World War II. Lord Westerham owns this place and lives there with his wife and five daughters. One day, his youngest daughter, Phoebe, finds a soldier’s dead body attached to a parachute on the estate. His British uniform and possessions raise great speculation causing an MI5 operative, Ben Cresswell, to find out if the body could be that of a German spy. Ben’s investigation allows for him to be connected to whom he secretly loves, Pamela, one of Lord Westerham’s daughters. However, Pamela is hiding her own secrets by taking a job at the British code-breaking facility. It is up to Ben to stop the spies and traitors who may be associated with Pamela’s family, before England falls. In Farleigh Field certainly had a very intriguing plot combining the historical fiction aspects to the mystery. It was a great entertaining mixture of English aristocracies and World War II spy games. I highly recommend this book if you’re interested in reading novels that have a good balance of history, suspense, romance, and family drama.

I really enjoyed this book - the characters, the setting, the plot, the mystery. While the book covers the familiar ground of Britain at the beginning of the second world war, the story is told primarily through the perspective of two people who are working separately, undercover. We are told only enough to keep us guessing - Are there German spies in the area? Can the British aristocracy be trusted or is someone a traitor? Who is the dead soldier found in Farleigh Field and why is he there? Well-researched and well-written, this was a page-turner that kept me guessing. I highly recommend this for an entertaining read.

This author can tell a story with some atmosphere and great sense of the countryside of England. This brought memories of the story of Rebecca. I enjoyed the story and thought it was relatively clean which is hard to find in fiction stories of today.

I couldn't put it down! I'm a big fan of hers anyway, but more so now. I'm a fellow Brits, so it's like going back home, plus time travel too. My Mum was a teenager in WW2 in the eastend of London, so it was like hearing my mum's stories about around that time, minus the big money though.

This is a nice bedtime read, not too intense, but interesting and enjoyable.

In a departure from her usual mystery series, one of my favorite authors pens another yet compelling WWII tale. "In Farleigh Field" is set in the countryside, featuring a noble family with four lively daughters.
When a paratrooper suspiciously lands in their family field, daughter Pamela and family friend Ben find they have a mystery on their hands. Was the victim a German spy? Are there other suspects in their bucolic village?

Easy read and a peak into life in England during WW 2. Good read.

I would describe this as a young adult novel. Everything about the story - plot, characters, language - is simplified and softened. There is no trace of irony or wit. It is certainly an entertaining story, but I feel a little patronized. I would recommend it for those who want a soothing, easy read.

I have found the stories set during WW II that involve large family estates being requisitioned by the military to be interesting. How the family deals with soldiers taking over parts of their grounds and the house. The dynamics between family members and soldiers. In Farleigh Field is about a soldier who falls to his death after his parachute fails. He lands on the estate of Lord Westerham, which has been also been requisitioned by the military. A family friend and member of MI 5 Ben Cresswell is on assignment to figure out if the solider is a German spy. In the meantime Lord Westerhams daughter, Pamela, does her part for the war by taking at job at Bletchley Park, working on code breaking while her family thinks she’s a secretary. Ben and Pamela end up working together to figure out the identity of the solider and run into some interesting adventures and people in the process. In Farleigh Field was a quick read with interesting characters and an intriguing plot.
