Dear Evan Hansen is a novel based on a broadway musical. Evan Hansen thinks of himself as unnormal he isolates himself from others, has social anxiety, and goes to a therapist. He broke his arm climbing a tree and through certain encounters a scary loner named Connor Murphy signed his cast. When Connor commits suicide his parents thought Evan and his son were friends which causes a huge misunderstanding and many problems. Through people believing they were friend Evan began to earn some popularity and many other benefits. But as things continue his lie gets bigger and bigger. I loved this book, it was highly entertaining and shed a light on loneliness. It showed how easy it is today to be isolated and how the truth always comes out eventually. I would definitely recommend this book!

Make sure and listen to the soundtrack when you read the book. It will make more sense that way then when you read it silently.

Dear Evan Hansen, written as a collaboration between Val Emmich, Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul was heavily based on the Broadway musical of the same name. It is about an adolescent boy named Evan Hansen who suffers from social anxiety, and how hard it is for him to make friends at school because of his disorder. He writes letters to himself as a way to deal with his struggles of talking to other people. One day, Evan’s letter had been found in the pockets of an intimidating student who had recently committed suicide, which gives him an opportunity to fabricate a friendship between the two in order to gain a sense of validity from his peers. One thing I absolutely loved about the book is the character arc of the protagonist Evan Hansen. It was fascinating seeing how psychologically damaging the lies were to Evan’s already declining mental health, it made me sympathize with him immensely, yet at the same time, disappointed since he could’ve approached the situation in a different manner despite suffering from social anxiety. However, as someone who’s watched the musical before, I’d definitely prefer to see the musical since the character’s emotions are more evident and more powerfully expressed.

So happy that there's a book! My love of reading and musicals is fulfilled! Great book, it explains a lot of stuff in the musical, plus you don't have to like musicals to read it.

I really enjoyed this book and it would be a great read for kids 12 and up. It was a little confusing at times for me and I think that but I think that Evan definitely changed throughout the book. Would recommend.

This book is about a guy named Evan who one day went from unnoticed to noticed all because of a letter. Evan then decides to keep the lie that he never meant to tell about his secret best friend, Connor Murphy. As each day passes Evan finds himself pulled deeper into a lie that is filled with anger, confusion and regret. Now, Evan has a purpose to continue this lie because he thinks that as long as he is being useful to those around him, how much harm can he do? This is a story about how one lie can turn into something much bigger and out of control than one might think and sometimes when that time comes the truth can be hard to say. I would give this book a 4/5 star rating. @PrimaBallerina of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Very enjoyable book that covers topics that weren't mentioned in the musical. Also tells the story from Connor's point of view.

I didn't think the book would be very good but my expectations were surpassed.
