This whole series:
Awful scripts, awful acting, awful music, awful hair (!)... couldn't get much worst than this! Only thing these DVDs are good for is to warn film students what a really, really bad production looks like.
BBC America productions are usually inferior to BBC British series...and this is no exception. It is simply awful: pretentious, silly and contrived. The stories are incoherent; the music too loud; and the acting stiff and unconvincing. I didn't bother finishing it, fearing loss of too many brain cells.
Not credible to adults. Poor writing.
Always nice to watch a drama that embodies an outlook from another part of the world. "MI-5," or "Spooks" as it is known in the UK, features some familiar faces if you watch entertainments from outside of the US. And some very able performances. It beats being subjected to yet another repeat of the degenerate spawn of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, at the least.
I quite like this series, but a lot of the episodic plots in this specific season seem to rely on deus ex machinae to be resolved by the end of the hour. It strikes me as being rather unrealistic. I'm currently watching the second season, and the writers do seem to have gotten a much better idea of the proper pace and scope for a story, but this is not the best example of their work.
Mind you, the series does get better, so watching this season is probably a good idea if only to set yourself up for the really excellent material later on.
One man's pot boiler is another man's gem. I love this series. You actually have to WATCH the screen to know what is going on. (I don't think that is true of a lot of American TV like Law and Order which is easy to watch while multi-tasking because the plot is so simple.)
