Longtime Jeopardy! host and television icon Alex Trebek reflects on his life and career.
Since debuting as the host of Jeopardy! in 1984, Alex Trebek has been something like a family member to millions of television viewers, bringing entertainment and education into their homes five nights a week. Last year, he made the stunning announcement that he had been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. What followed was an incredible outpouring of love and kindness. Social media was flooded with messages of support, and the Jeopardy! studio received boxes of cards and letters offering guidance, encouragement, and prayers.

For over three decades, Trebek had resisted countless appeals to write a book about his life. Yet he was moved so much by all the goodwill, he felt compelled to finally share his story. "I want people to know a little more about the person they have been cheering on for the past year," he writes in The Answer Is...: Reflections on My Life.

The book combines illuminating personal anecdotes with Trebek's thoughts on a range of topics, including marriage, parenthood, education, success, spirituality, and philanthropy. Trebek also addresses the questions he gets asked most often by Jeopardy! fans, such as what prompted him to shave his signature mustache, his insights on legendary players like Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer, and his opinion of Will Ferrell's Saturday Night Live impersonation. The book uses a novel structure inspired by Jeopardy!, with each chapter title in the form of a question, and features dozens of never-before-seen photos that candidly capture Trebek over the years.

This wise, charming, and inspiring book is further evidence why Trebek has long been considered one of the most beloved and respected figures in entertainment.

Absolutely LOVED this book! Did not want to put it down! Such a fast read! Was like Alex was having a conversation with us, telling us stories, each chapter is it’s own story. Is a book you can read over and over again!
Rated 6/5 stars!

This was an enjoyable easy read of Alex Trebek’s life. It is an autobiography, and he’s a game show host, not a writer. But his witty remarks made me lol and he even cursed sometimes! That surprised me somehow... RIP Alex

With his book Alex Trebek proved he was as affable and entertaining in print as he was on television. Apparently, his book was written and published only a few months before he died. It is an easy read. It is a quick read - due in part to its format, that being a series of short personal glimpses into Alex's life (thus, reflections). Each is enjoyable, unpredictable and, if allowed to be, inspiring. He included so many pictures. Stories and photos seem to have a balanced quality of both personal and iconic. A must read for all "Jeopardy!" fans!

Because of the number of people who had placed a hold on the book, I was only able to read it after Alex Trebek had passed away. Timing worked out to my advantage, though, as I finished the book on the Friday that his last Jeopardy! episode was broadcast.

The stories about his childhood and youth are interesting, and a number of funny annectodes from all periods of his life are recalled. But what I found interesting, and what elevated the book for me, is when you get to the end, when Alex is fully aware that he is dying. A sense of a man at peace with his mortality emergences. He's accepted the outcome, and does not fear it, as he is happy with the life he lived.

The conclusion of the book, when he describes how he would like his life to ultimately end, touches on the poetic

Heartwarming, touching and inspiring. We’re lucky to get an insight of what Alex really was in this book. So sad to lose such a great person. I miss him dearly. I no longer watch Jeopardy as it’s not the same. I feel Alex is Jeopardy’s trademark.

Nice, heartwarming stories with lots of positive messages. Nothing over-the-top amazing about this book, but I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this book - he has some nice reflections on his life and interesting stories. The chapters are only a couple pages and it reads quite fast. I found it interesting to learn about where he had come from and how he ended up where he did. I liked the comment he made about always wanting to learn (whether you remember it or not) because the act of learning kind of broadens your perspective on the world.

Alex (with some help, probably) has left us an interesting biography; satisfying but not outstanding. Nothing wrong with that. I enjoyed the read.
