I thought this wasn't the greatest. effort by spike lee.

This was a very good movie about how African-Americans were not only given the chance to fight in WWII but to show the powers to be that they were equal and just as good as any white soldier. This movie had it all: grief, love, loyalty, brotherhood, compassion, duty and a sense of belonging. Two parts stood out for me: One, where the black staff sergeant realized that he felt more free being in Italy, and how the people treated them there, and two, when the little boy that they had rescued, had grown up and had bought the statue that one of the black soldiers had found, gave it back to the remaining black soldier who had survived, after being released from police custody for shooting the Italian underground fighter who betrayed not only his own comrades but the black soldiers as well.

Good black war drama. Nothing about this movie says Spike Lee (which isn't really either good or bad just a statement of fact). Slick story with a twist. Good violence. Good acting. Nothing I'd care to see again, but I was kept entertained throughout.

Well done film. In Spike Lee's words ''It's true there are different interpretations of the massacre but one thing is certain and it's the story I wanted to tell: that the SS 16th Division killed 560 civilians on August 12, 1944''.

Definitely not your typical WWII movie, given its primary focus on the (mostly) African-American "Buffalo Soldier" infantry division and how its members were treated at home, by their white commanders in the field, and by the Italian villagers they encountered. Mostly good performances, particularly including that of "the boy," Angelo. // Themes include: bigotry; duplicity; faith; loyalty; political influence; post-traumatic stress; retribution; war crimes. Shows the cruelty of war, and the occasional glimmers of humane actions. // Except for the beginning and ending segments, set and beautifully filmed in Tuscany. Violent scenes (especially the events at St. Ana) may be disturbing for some.

Spike tells a good war story and leads you along an unsuspected path of intrigue with less gun fire than a spagetti western. The acting is solid. A good view. Attention holding - Entertaining.

Not a bad "war film", although an account of the 92'nd Infantry Division (Buffalo Soldiers) which contained mainly Black soldiers (under mainly White offiicers), might have been better if based on something historical rather than this fiction. Interesting in the film is a rather thinly very thinly veiled commentary on the treatment of partisans / terrorists and the Geneva Convention. I think Spike Lee made his point.

Good – Miracle at St. Anna (2008) 160 min. directed by Spike Lee. This is the story about a WWII African-American army troupe called “Buffalo Soldiers” who hide-out in a small village in northern Italy (Tuscany) surrounded by the Germans. The film was beautifully shot on location with terrific battle scenes. The film is quite long but never boring. The only reservation I had with this film is the lack of cohesion; as if something is missing that tie everything together. I’m not really sure if the soldier, who killed the man at the start of the film, had enough motivation to do what he did [the film flashbacks to WWII where this all began]. We know what the man did, but not the soldier. Despite this reservation, there’s a certain charm and innocence to the film that is worth watching.
