Scouting for Boys (1908) is the original blueprint and 'self-instructor' of the Boy Scout Movement. An all-time bestseller, it is both a handbook and a philosophy for a way of living that replaces self with service, puts country before individual, and duty above all. As well as practical instructions on how to light fires and stalk men and animals, it includes sections on chivalry, self-discipline, self-improvement and citizenship. This new edition reveals its maverick complexity and explores its contradictions about sexuality, the environment, and the empire.

This book is an excellent read for all boys, not only those who want to be scouts. On the contrary, it should be read by every boy everywhere because of the great info. The only thing is that there are a few old-fashioned techniques and procedures like how to stop a run away horse. Still, it's a very good book.

This book teaches some basic as well as not-so-basic skills that are very often ignored nowadays. Such things as how to cook food over an open fire, first-aid, deduction, courtesy, hygiene, and building a shelter are just a few of the many things shown.
