If you're looking for a good Gothic, try this.
Ticks all the boxes on the classic romance: the brooding master of the remote manor, the mysterious death of the first wife, the almost-mute child who might hold the key to the questions, the penniless but attractive heroine who arrives on the scene. Somehow this one has all the elements but is not as well written or compelling as the author's other early works.
I am not a fan of Jean Plaidy (Eleanor Hibbert ), yet I enjoyed this book very much. She made heroine at times a bit too "modern" for the time-frame of the story, but did not compromise the development of the story.
