This seriocomic adaptation of Mordecai Richler's award-winning 1997 novel stars Paul Giamatti as Barney Panofsky, who meets the great love of his life, Miriam (Rosamund Pike), at the most inopportune time imaginable: his marriage to his second wife (Minnie Driver), a wealthy Jewish princess and compulsive shopper. Narrated by Barney as a confessional, the film covers 30 years of his unusual journey -- from his first marriage to the chronically unfaithful free spirit Clara (Rachelle Lefevre) and their life in Italy together, through his third marriage to Miriam, with whom he has two children. Standing in the wings is Barney's father, Izzy (Dustin Hoffman), who continues to stick by him as his loyal right-hand man. Through it all, Barney experiences numerous highs and lows, but manages to consistently surprise everyone with unforeseen acts of altruism and kindness that turn him into the quintessential modern hero.

I cannot compare this film to the book, since I have not read it. Its a pretty good film, very bright and yellow, with some key plot elements left dangling till the end (but one doesn't mind since the characters are interesting enough). Although the characters are wealthy, they are rather vulgar, especially Barney.

I started watching this one other time and stopped because I really can't stand Paul Giamatti. Once I got through all his inept and drunken disgusting character the movie actually took off and went somewhere; although it was unrealistic that 'Mirium' would ever go for a man like Barney is ridiculous. I really like Rosamund or Roselyn Pike's acting. She gave this movie a touch of respectability. Dustin Hoffman's acting was great but what a rakish role he had to play. I liked Dustin Hoffman's son playing the son of Barney.

A comedy drama of a string of events in Barney's life that is dominated by his old friend's sudden disappearance in between one of his three marriages, matrimony ala carte to fulfill an obligation, lust and love. The film's glaring flaw is that the miscast of Giamatti as Barney who, despite of all his physical and character shortcomings, attracts beautiful independent women all the same. Understand that the book is a good read but this film adaptation is just a decent watch.

A very convoluted love story that eventually ends in a loving resolution!

Seen this movie on dash board,so i ordered it. I had forgotten that i had checked it out before. I was hooked to watch the entire movie again.
Barney was a mess. Izzy the father was great. You would think the drinking and smoking cigars would have gotten Barney before the Alzheimer's. Izzy had the best way to exit this life. :-)

A very good adaptation of the book (of the same title) by Mordecai Richler.

I am surprised that this film didn't get more recognition in the Academy Award. It is funny and full of events during a feature length. After I finish watching it, I feel like there is still more to come like an episode 2 or something.

Pike was absolutely stunning and the Protagonist definitely went all the way out to be his best here.

Some quotes in IMDb but surprised that these two not:

I want one thing from you.
Don't answer, "Anything." 'Cause it's not real. And life's real. It's made up of little things,
minutes, hours, naps, errands, routine and it has to be enough.
Look, you're talking to someone who knows how hard marriage can be. In the beginning, it's all briskets and blowjobs and la-di-da, ain't life grand? But soon enough, real life starts, right? You come home from work, all she wants to do is talk. All you want to do is screw, right? And before long, every day is like pushing an avocado through a cheese grater. It all feels like you're holding a pile of shit.
