Simone St. James is great with atmosphere. I could easily feel the damp air that was eating away at Portis House, a grand, but isolated manor house. Unfortunately, this story didn't live up to its potential. The ghosts are present, but not terribly scary. And honestly, the characters often behaved in ways that were quite unbelievable. The conclusion felt a bit too convenient, but also a bit open-ended (which was strange considering how much the author wrapped everything up!) I'm not giving up on St. James; I just hope the next book I pick up by her has a little more spookiness going on.
