5 stars. This was a terrific read, very intense. Imagine you had a lovely life with your husband and son and extended family and business. And imagine if some gunmen came in and killed most of your family and you and your son had to leave everything behind and run for your life. Imagine putting your life in the hands of others, every day a danger, trying to get north to safety. That's the story of Lydia and her son Luca as they leave the brutality of life in Acapulco, Mexico on the run from the cartel who killed 16 of your family in one brutal day. Lydia and Luca begin a journey to get to the US and hopefully, freedom. This book was a compulsive page turner with wonderfully written characters and situations. At times brutal, it was a reality check on what really happens in the world and put faces to the people in the newspapers who actually experienced this kind of journey. Such a good read.
