An enjoyable read. Could be read as a stand alone even though it is part of a long series featuring Game Warden Joe Pickett. The story has several story threads, each varying in length and depth and each one helping to extend the novel. The story thread about the grizzly bear attack was interesting but was a dead end in furthering the plot. The portrayal of Tom's girlfriend was uncomplimentary and her part was only necessary to give readers an idea the direction where the plot was headed. The story thread about the sharp shooter from Mexico in town to revenge the death of his fellow cartel members on the town's court steps provided some tension, but that character appeared only periodically and mainly at the end for a dramatic conclusion concerning Nate. The outcome of that encounter may be a reason why we may not see him in the next Picket novel. Will Joe also be sidelined in the next Pickett novel? Joe is hurt badly in his shoot out; maybe he too is out of the next novel while he recuperates. I also didn't care for the portrayal of corruption in the town's justice department. Despite these observations, the novel is a worthwhile read.
