Sacred River

This is a lovingly told examination of the Thamesm England's most famous river. The author talks about the origins of the river, the litereature, music and art the river has spawned. He talks about its history, the bridges built over it and the tunnels dug beneath it. Tracing its course and it's affect on the surroundings. He describes the people who have earned and continue to earn their living from the river. He talks, too, about its highs and lows including how filthy it once was and how even though it is cleaner it will never be absolutely clean. It is history and travel wrapped up in one package. Beautifly written and well researched/
