This did not feel like a middle grade novel - and I mean that in the best way. It was easy to understand and to feel but it was not simple. Woodson writes about the complexities of her childhood and doesn’t water anything down. And I think that even if you can’t relate to all of her story (or the bigger parts of it) it is likely that there is something in there that you can relate to.
